International artists and technologists have been working in our Minghella studio to find a common language by combining their creative knowledge with Motion Capture in a training week.MoCap for website 2

This has been a fantastic opportunity for the theatre and the University of Portsmouth to collaborate in developing artists skills with new technologies under a new programmed called the Technology Gateway.

Performers and actors from around the world have been working with state of the art Vicon motion capture equipment. Wearing specialist suits embellished with 53 3D position markers they are tracked by a total of 20 cameras. The specially placed cameras stream the movements and dimensions in real time to specialised motion capture software.

The streamed data can then be used to transform the performers into computer generated creatures and characters. Recently the RSC used the same technology as part of there production The Tempest.

On a daily bases the artists have also been participating in combat and action exercises, creature creation, and facial capture to create the virtual characters.

Motion Caption Training Week at the New Theatre Royal is in partnership with the University of Portsmouth and Captivate Action.
