Stepping into two very different pairs of shoes this year is Adrian Bevan who is taking on the roles of Clara’s father, Mr Stahlbaum, and the Queen of Pirlipat.
How are you getting on with rehearsals?
It’s a very full on process, with such a wide variety of stuff to do, we’re doing something different every day. I’m in a bit of a daze at the moment, but we are seeing it come together. The cast are lovely so I’m really enjoying it.
Tell us a bit more about your characters?
Mr Stahlbaum is Clara’s father, he’s the authority figure amongst his wife and three children. He’s a playwright struggling to think of new material and keep the family together. He’s very creative, intelligent and well-educated.
Then I have Queen of Pirlipat, in the Land of Splendour, who is very off the wall. She’s a feeder – she shows her love through food. They are traditionalists and having an incredible celebration for the King’s birthday, involving a rather wild sausage machine…
What are you looking forward to the most about performing in The Nutcracker this December?
I’m really excited to see the magic come together through lighting, costume, set, and interaction with the audience. And to get my costumes on! And to be a snowflake…
What can audiences expect from this production of The Nutcracker?
Over 120 costumes! Magic. The unexpected. And an exciting tale.
What do you associate with Christmas?
Family. This is my first one in four years that I’ll get to spend it with them – so thank you for that opportunity!
If you could choose anything, what would you ask Drosselmeyer to create for you?
A stopwatch to go back in time with, that looks like a beautiful Victorian pocket watch, on a gold chain.
