The New Theatre Royal pantomime Aladdin is a fun, light-hearted time out at the theatre that’s suitable for all. In association with Jordan Productions, this panto is guaranteed to get you in the Christmas spirit!

This modern take on an old classic is based around the original storyline of Aladdin but does not fail to include everyone’s favourite panto features. The characters are played and portrayed incredibly well, including all the main Aladdin characters, alongside the iconic Widow Twankey and even a Spanish Genie. With Aladdin and Jasmine’s love story, mixed with some comedy gold from many other characters implementing a great selection of well-known songs makes up a perfect plot.

The show opens with a strong scene from the evil Abanazaar setting the form for the rest of the performance. This scene immediately gets the audience involved with booing the actor before the hilarious Wishee Washee enters the stage giving shout outs to families in the audience, including an amazing ice skating give away!

However, the performance quality from the actors wasn’t the only eye-catching part, the attention to detail in the costume and set design was outstanding. My personal favourite was Widow Twankey’s washing machine dress in the first act when we were introduced to the character in the most comedic pure panto way possible. Boys beware if you’re sat in the front row as you may catch the loving eyes of Widow Twankey!

If an interactive show is something you enjoy this show is definitely one for you, from call and response, to running through the audience and even a very slippery laundry scene there is always something for the audience to be doing and enjoying. At the end of the show there is even a chance for a few selected children to go up onto stage and be involved in a sing along with the wonderful Wishee Washee.

Within this panto is something for everyone, a fun time for kids as well as some adult humour for the parents, this panto is for sure a perfect family viewing! The quick witty lines from the cast and the way they are able to bounce off of each other is incredibly fun to watch, not forgetting the extremely well thought out laundrette joke routine.

I thoroughly enjoyed my evening at The New Theatre Royal watching Aladdin and would strongly recommend to all. Immerse yourself into some Christmas joy by going on this magic carpet ride, however it is a pantomime so anything can happen!
