Multi-award-winning comedy theatre company New Old Friends has created a magical, comical escape from reality show for all ages – Houdini’s Greatest Escape!
The show begins how it means to go on with an incredible routine of magic tricks before moving into the storyline. The opening scene includes many classic magic tricks and an introduction to the main character, Harry Houdini.
Charming man, Harry Houdini, is joined by his witty wife and magic assistant Bess on one of their greatest escapes yet. Both actors portray their roles and newfound American accents so effortlessly, making for a brilliant, light-hearted watch. All the other characters in the show are multi-rolled by the same two individuals. To have the ability to play such a diverse range of characters was impressive alone but was added to by one man playing 4 characters at once.
The storyline of the show portrays Houdini’s escape and fight to prove his innocence after a set up by his biggest competition. The journey throughout displays the storyline clearly, while keeping that high dose of comedy and magic. The audience was constantly laughing throughout the piece, especially when a local joke was dropped.
As far as creativity goes, this is one of the best shows I have seen. The set changes, props and costumes were so simple yet so effective. The quick costume changes by the phenomenal multirole actors had everyone questioning if there were triplets. As the journey
advanced, the set began as a classic magic show set, which quickly formed into things such as, the police station, the woods and even an incredibly effective underwater scene.
At the end of the show, a full circle moment is experienced as the story ends how it began. The final scene involves the biggest magic trick of the show, with all 4 actors are involved. The trick is a classic of getting out of a locked box. However, the plot twist lies with who is left in the box at the end.
This performance was a brilliant night at the theatre. The comedy and magic, combined with the entertaining and sometimes mind-boggling storyline, this show was a hit within the audience. Suitable for all ages, this would be the perfect family night out for all. If some magical comedy is something you would enjoy, this is definitely a show to add to your list!
