The New Theatre Royal is a Victorian Phipps/Matcham theatre in the centre of the city of Portsmouth originating in 1856. Partially destroyed by fire in 1972, the theatre has been owned and managed by the trust since 1976 with an ambitious mission to restore a heritage building and provide serve the diverse needs of the communities and economy of the city and wider region.
In March 2013 a £9m building project started in partnership with the University of Portsmouth to restore the stage tower and create accommodation including a creative learning centre in memory of the director Anthony Minghella. This work is due for completion in late 2014 after which the theatre will reopen.
Successful applicants must be prepared to be proactive, attending six scheduled and possible additional board meetings each year. Trustees are required to contribute to sub-committees or working parties to advise the board on specific areas of strategy such as fundraising or finance.
We are at a very exciting and challenging time in the development of the organisation and we are seeking exceptional individuals keen to help us achieve our vision, goals and strategy going forward.
Appointees will contribute to leadership and management enabling the board to fulfill their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, and ensuring that appropriate decisions are correctly made. They will work in partnership with the chief executive officer to ensure that trustee decisions are acted upon and the charity is managed effectively.

- Strategic management of a theatre or similar cultural organisation
- Corporate law
- Corporate governance and decision-making
- Pre-16 education
- Equality and diversity
