We caught up with one of Portsmouth’s greatest cultural champions, Liz Weston, about her latest work – Time and Tide – which is part of our Festival of the Sea.

Q: Liz, what drew you to create Time & Tide?
A: When I learned about The Festival of the Sea and was asked if I would be interested in creating a piece I immediately said ‘Yes!’ as I was sure that it would be a terrific opportunity for the NTR Players and NTR Dancers to work together again, but also to involve young people.
It’s a wonderful chance to create a cross-generational piece of work on a theme that we can all relate to. Also as a director of Portsmouth Poetry, I knew we could integrate the work of local poets into the piece.
Q: What inspires you in your work across Portsmouth communities?
A: The belief that everyone can be creative and knowing the amazing things that can happen when you put artists, writers, film makers, visual artists and theatre workers with a group of people, whether they are children from the Somerstown Adventure Playground, young mums in Portsea or a group of Southsea pensioners.
Q: What’s next for NTR Players?
A: We will be working on a piece with the ‘City of Stories’ project, researching the City Archives and turning the stories we find into performances.
