Today we catch up with Phil Woods, the maestro who keeps the music coming during Peter Pan.
How long have you been working in theatre?
I graduated in music at the University of Chichester in 2014 and have gone on to be based between Portsmouth and Manchester. I also work as a musical director with Royal Caribbean Cruises, which takes me overseas from time to time.
Does music it keep you busy?
Yes, I’ve been non-stop for two years now. Before starting the Peter Pan project, I set up Grease on its first cruise tour and more recently worked on We Will Rock You’. I’m enjoying working across the world while I’m still young and free – a bit like Peter Pan!
What attracted you to working on Peter Pan, instead of putting your feet up for Christmas?
It’s such an iconic, magical story. I was attracted to helping create this rich new blend of production, bringing strong music and high-quality storytelling to life in this beautiful theatre. I love the New Theatre Royal.
What is it like, rehearsing such a big show?
It was a tight rehearsal process. I needed to convey a lot of information and technique in a short space of time. The company have been incredible to work with, and working with my fellow creative was wonderful. As well as learning the vast array of songs in the production, I also keep an eye on daily warm-ups and care.
What themes do you think people will relate to in Peter Pan?
From a child’s perspective, going on an adventure. A really, really magical adventure that encourages imagination and curiosity. Those are things we need in our world. From a parent’s viewpoint, it will tug on their heartstrings repeatedly. I can see lots of boys and girls bonding with their parents having seen it.
And finally, Christmas is coming, what would you like?
My very own music studio looking down over Southsea Common. I can dream!
