We’re excited to announce that we have teamed up with Highbury College to launch a new diploma for performing arts students this September.
A diploma with a difference, the new BTEC Level 3 in Performing Arts is the first of its kind in Portsmouth, as drama students will have the chance to learn all about working backstage in a real theatre.
The course will be officially launched at our Creative Choices Day on the 6th July, when we will play host to a number of Portsmouth schools for our first careers event.
Open to local schools, Creative Choices Day provides students aged 14 to 18 who have expressed an interest in performing arts with the opportunity to meet industry professionals and learn about life behind the scenes at a working theatre. Students are invited to participate in a number of interactive workshops including playwriting, stage skills and choreography that will be delivered by our practitioners such as revered playwright Bernie C Byrnes, our technicians and Creative Lab Associate Sasha from Funk Format, a choreographer and movement artist.
The course starts this September and will see students spend one day a week at our theatre, gaining hands on experience in sound engineering, stage lighting and stage management, and a further two days at Highbury Campus to study performance skills.
At the end of the two-year programme, students will receive a qualification that is the equivalent to three A Levels, allowing them to progress to either University, an apprenticeship or directly into the industry.
