Known to Portsmouth audiences as Frederick from last year’s Beauty and the Beast, this Christmas show sees the return of Tim Lucas, this time as the dastardly Captain Hook. We had a chat with him.
Hi Tim, I know you’re really busy in rehearsals so thanks for catching up with us. How is it being back in Portsmouth?
I’m thrilled to be back in Portsmouth. I’m really looking forward to performing for those families who saw me last year, and families coming to New Theatre Royal’s Christmas show for the first time. I’ve stayed in touch with a few families from last year and created some really nice friendships, so I’m looking forward to building on that.
How are rehearsals going?
I’m loving getting into the detail of this world we’re creating, Neverland and all that surrounds it, and working out the relationships between the characters. I’m so enjoying creating Hook, it’s great to tease people and wind them and know it’s my job! I’m particularly enjoying Hook’s relationship with Madame Lily, he likes to think he’s got real charisma and charm with her – but I don’t think she falls for it!
What are you enjoying about working with us?
I love this theatre and just being around it. It’s a real family theatre, and I like its independent vibe. Rehearsing here we’re really in the heart of the theatre, part of the building. It’s magic really, especially Naomi, our costume designer, she’s the most magical human in the world! I’d love to say I’ve been enjoying the seafront but I haven’t had the time!
You’re an old hand at our Christmas shows now, what’s it like to return?
It feels so supportive. I really feel like I’ve been welcomed by everyone, I’m very glad to be back.
What are you looking forward to about the performances?
I have a great song – ‘Smell of Rebellion’ from Matilda. I love that stage of pulling a production together, I’m looking forward to working with the tech guys and girls again and then getting into the run.
What are your memories of Christmas shows as a child?
I don’t really remember going to Christmas shows, but my dad used to tell me the most fantastic stories. I was convinced my dad was actually Santa Claus, he had a white beard and told me we had reindeer on our roof. I believed everything he said – he was an incredible story and joke teller, and had a great way with words. It really set a Christmas atmosphere.
Speaking of Santa, what would you like for Christmas?
I would… really like a holiday! I’ve just come straight from touring Cilla so I’d like a holiday where I can relax, with a beautiful landscape, character and authenticity. Can you get me that Nic?!
